Building community, visibility, and opportunity for Black artists across Washtenaw County
The Sankofa Washtenaw County Black Arts Association will host its first public community meeting on June 18, 2026, at 5:30 PM on the third floor of the Riverside Arts Center in Ypsilanti, Michigan. This gathering will introduce the vision of the collective while creating space for Black artists, educators, creatives, and community members to connect and begin building future collaborations throughout Washtenaw County and surrounding communities.
Conversations will center around community, visibility, programming, advocacy, and opportunities for Black artists across multiple disciplines.
May 7, 2026 the core members of the Black Art Collective gathered in Ypsilanti to discuss the foundation and future vision of the collective. Conversations focused on youth outreach, interdisciplinary arts programming, community partnerships, artist support, and creating a collaborative space centered on visibility, accessibility, and collective growth for Black artists throughout Washtenaw County and surrounding communities.
April 2026 - An initial gathering of local Black artists and community members was held to begin conversations around the need for a collaborative arts network within the Ypsilanti and Washtenaw County area. The meeting focused on shared experiences, community needs, and the early vision for what would eventually become the Black Art Collective.
